In high school I found out that I was good at explaining complex subjects to others. I spent time after school helping my friends with math. Later when I went to college I had an opportunity to be a teaching assistant while I was an undergraduate student in Physics. I don't know how many students I had who told me that I was one of the best teachers that they ever had. At the time I didn't know what to think of it, I was just a kid, and some of my students were older than I was. But over time these complements didn't stop, and it at the time, I didn't think about using this as a career. In 1988 I transferred to Texas A&M, where I switched majors to Engineering. I needed a job and got one in the physics department. This was a good start, it introduced me to tutoring classes for students. It wasn't until a few years later that I started tutoring for the athletic department. That was an experience. Some of the athletes really wanted to succeed both on the playing field and in academics. I quickly got the reputation as one of the best tutors in the program, and had quite a few of the indispensable players as my students. It was at this time that I started saving money to open up Tutorjohn. After getting a loan from my brother, I started it in fall 1999, and it kept growing from there. I had the privilege to help A larger portion of the student body each year. One of the things that gives me great joy is that now I have the children of my early students coming to me for help with their classes. |
